Our Mission: to produce sustainably grown native plants crucial for providing food and habitat for wildlife for Appalachian and Piedmont gardens and landscapes
A garden is a home for bugs
Bug Lovers Native Plants was founded in 2021 in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Based in Ashe County, our nursery is a small business with a big goal – to produce sustainably grown native plants crucial for providing food and habitat for wildlife for Appalachian and Piedmont gardens and landscapes. More specifically, we demonstrate our love for our bug friends by not using pesticides of any kind, and offering a selection of plants which can function as an ecological benefit in landscapes big and small.
All the plant species we offer are native to North Carolina, grown from seed here in Ashe, and many of our selected species provide key benefits to our native ecosystems. Many of our native perennials, grasses, and shrubs provide food for pollinating insects through their beautiful flowers, but some have key specific relationships with rare bees, butterflies, and moths. Others are ecological powerhouses, with flowers that bloom for months during critical periods, and can provide food for a variety of species, from birds to box turtles! And perhaps best of all, we humans can enjoy the beauty of these plants in our home gardens and landscapes in addition to the benefits they bring.
Our online store is open for shipping of bare root plants in spring and fall, while our container plants can be purchased in person April-October at our local farmers markets and at the High Country Food Hub for local pickup.
